Kathleen Feenstra has created more than 120 original works for piano, specializing in pedagogical repertoire that combines expressive, imaginative writing with purposeful technical development. One of her greatest joys is hearing students bring her music to life in lessons, recitals, festivals, and examinations.
Her piano repertoire is published through 80 Days Publishing, with five books currently available and five additional collections in the final stages of publication. Kathleen continues to expand her catalogue, with further books planned for the future.
Two Pedagogical Series
Kathleen’s published repertoire is organized into two complementary series: the Seed to Song Series and the Flight Path Series. Together, they provide a carefully structured pathway of musical growth from a student’s earliest experiences at the piano through advanced artistic expression.
The Seed to Song Series follows the imagery of plant life, from seeds and sprouts through shoots and blossoms, reflecting the natural development of confidence, technique, musical understanding, and expressive ability.
The Flight Path Series follows the journey of birds from fledglings to independent fliers, emphasizing increasing coordination, independence, musical maturity, and artistic expression. Whispers of Wonder, the fifth book in the series, is already published, with additional books currently in production.
A significant milestone in Kathleen’s composing career is the selection of her piano works for inclusion in the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) Piano Syllabus. Her compositions have also received recognition through three CFMTA Call for Compositions wins (2016, 2022, and 2025), inclusion in the ACWC Piano Collective Catalogue, and the ACNMP Contemporary Showcase Festival Syllabus. Kathleen is an Associate Composer of the Canadian Music Centre.
